My design reflects the diverse culture and flavour of the history of Ponsonby road mix with a modern vibrant style. Growing up in Ponsonby I feel I have a connection with this directly.
The design will be painted with aerosol and acrylic paint, if i win that is! I hope you like it!

"We have just finished a show and have been working on the theme of native birds, graphic design & Māori influence for a while now. We aren't too savvy with photoshop but if you check out our website and facebook page the images we will be painting are realistic birds on a graphic interpretation - they will actually be grasping the lines/shapes. The pātiki design (diamond shapes) represent favourable harvest & inclusion, something we want to release & paint to bless the Ponsonby shopping district & to bring a communal sense to the space & people. The intertwining diamond shapes & mirrored birds are about unity between cultures, people, ages. 'Haere mai' welcomes you to the spot to stand where you can take selfies while the kai (guardians) stand watch over you. Designed to be at a height where you can hongi the Tui, stand next to, reach up if your a child etc."

"I have also made a mock up how it would look when it's on the wall with people in front of it. The idea is that people take pictures standing in front of that crazy abstract version of Ponsonby with the sky tower in the back ground. A good tourist picture maybe too? ;) Since summer is coming i've used lots of light colours. The white colour could be also chalk paint, so people could colour in the white bits which are left with chalk but could be difficult to leave chalk around ... taking pictures is the main interaction idea."

The idea behind my work is, 'my ponsonby' what is ponsonby to you?
The image is about community and discovering that we all like similar things and all love ponsonby. Hopefully it will get people talking to each other, and build new relationships through the common grounds portrayed in the imagery. I have used images of what I think Ponsonby is and also has a Ponsonby vibe to it.
Customers and passers by will be able to hashtag #myponsonby with a photo of the image and then use the given characters on Instagram etc. They can tell a story or something about what ponsonby is to them. What is 'my Ponsonby'.
It would be really interesting to start a separate project with the information people provide through the hashtag. For example, posting people's stories on the Ponsonby Central Facebook with a photo of them and their story, this would tell people more about the community they live in and the kind of awesome people of Ponsonby. There is a really cool project called 'Humans of New York' based on Facebook and I think we could do a similar idea through this medium.
My main output of my work is based on Insatgram, where you could find me as:

This design pays tribute to the wonderful creatures that walk Ponsonbys’ streets, and contribute to Ponsonby’s unique culture. Much like Margaret Mahys’ Hairy Mclary children’s books, Ponsonby Central is home to some of New Zealand’s finest pooches.
While ladies congregate with their pooches on Richmond Road corner (three dogs to one lead) sipping Eight Thirty coffee in the sun, a man lounges outside Little bread and Butter with his best friend snoozing under the café table, tethered to a chair leg. Thirty-something hipsters cradle Frenchies while devouring Burger Burger and offering their drooling companions the occasional kumura chip morsel. The dogs are chilled, often waiting on their owners who weave between butchers, bakers, delies, cafes seven days a week.
Ponsonby Central; an intersection of fashionistas, fine food and wine, and ‘the hangout’ for New Zealand’s finest of dogs. Auckland's Pooches of Ponsonby.
Lets celebrate and acknowledge these wonderful animals, big and small.THE ART WORK
